This month’s Birchbox arrived in a whirlwind of pastel and pineapples. My first thought was “how summery!” My second thought was “Oh, it’s a drawer!” There was a bit of time between my receiving this month’s Birchbox and actually opening that, but when I finally got to it, I was intrigued by the contents!
what’s in my box?
jelly pong pong paradise pigments
“Don’t be afraid! This more-subtle-than-it-looks pigment pot is the perfect way to inject some colour into your make-up routine. It blends out beautifully to add a pop of colour to lips and cheeks and can be built up for bolder colour. Bonus: it’s ultra-hydrating!”
my impression: There were two sample colors sent out of this little pot and I got Fig Jam. I was a little wary of the pinkness of the shade, because I’ve never really tried anything quite so magenta! In practice though, the color isn’t that concentrated when you put it on. I enjoyed using it as a little lip balm, but could see that it would be very easy to layer on the color for more of a pop! I used it on my cheeks as well, and it worked just fine, but I preferred the color on my lips. I’ll definitely be using this on a regular basis!
percy & reed reassuringly firm session hold hairspray
“Spent ages perfecting those Pinterest-inspired braids? You need a spritz of strong hold hairspray to keep your hard work in place. This ultra fine, humidity-resistant spray is free of that crunchy feeling – so restyle away if your heart desires!”
my impression: My curls notoriously never stay put. I’m sure any girl with curly hair can attest to the fact that if you want your style to stay, hairspray will do the job. Most of the time. That being said, I don’t really use hairspray. I don’t really like how it makes my hair feel, but this sample actually worked really well! It didn’t leave my hair feeling crunchy, and the area where I used it (on a big braid) wasn’t too stiff or sticky when I took it out! I’ll be keeping this on my shelf for sure, as it did the job while eliminating all the problems I normally find with hairspray!
absolution le nettoyant pureté
“You know that tight feeling your skin gets sometimes after cleansing? This gentle gel face cleanser will make that a thing of the past! Natural ingredients, like chamomile and oats, remove dirt and grime while reducing redness and irritation.”
my impression: I have always found that face cleansers that were the least bit foamy always dried out my skin. So I stick with creamy cleansers these days. My favorite at the moment is by Frank Body, but I was willing to give this one a try. It starts off as a clear gel, but gets the teeniest bit foamy when you add water. My face felt clean for sure, and not dry like it normally does with gel cleansers, but I still prefer the creamy texture of my other face wash. While it was nice to try another face cleanser, honestly, I was indifferent about this one…
cynthia rowley beauty brightening illuminator
“Whether you’re a pro at strobing or a highlighting beginner, this velvety formula delivers a subtle sheen that instantly brightens all skin tones. Formulated with just the right amount of shimmer, it dries to a pearlescent finish that lightens up your complexion with ease.”
my impression: It’s pink! I’ve never used an illuminator before but for some reason I wasn’t expecting it to be pink. Weird, right? Lucky for me, the packaging includes a handy little guide for where and how to apply said highlighter. I don’t really wear a ton of make-up normally, so seeing my face with some highlighter was a strange experience. I didn’t really like it, actually, and will stick to my normal regime. I will say this though: the highlighter did blend in very easily, and I liked the creamy texture. It might not have been for me purely from preference, but if you do like to contour and highlight, this is going to be worth a try.
pure & light organic essential face cream
“You might pack vitamins into your morning smoothie, but what about a dose for your skin? This daily moisturiser is packed with then (A, B, C and E to be precise!) as well as omegas 3 and 6, to boost cell renewal and deliver hydration”
my impression: Moisturize. The one thing I always forget to do. I use facial oil after I wash my face, but I always forget to moisturize. I’m a terrible person, I know. This stuff though, was great! A little bit went a long way and my skin positively soaked it up! I’ve been using it for a few days now and my skin feels great. It doesn’t leave an oily residue either, which is a definite bonus since I have oily skin, and it feels thick and creamy on my skin. Some moisturizers feel watered down and thin, which in turn makes my skin feel a bit gross, but I’ve been using it for a few days now and my skin feels great!
the verdict: I’d say this months box is a solid 4 out of 5. There was only one product I didn’t particularly care for, and while I was indifferent about another, it was still a nice sample. I used it a few times, and the only reason I didn’t love it was because it didn’t really do anything to completely outrank my current product. It was still pretty good! My favorite samples? Probably the face cream and the hairspray, two things that are now in my regiment that weren’t before. And that’s the whole point of Birchbox, isn’t it?
