Apologies for the radio silence, guys! I meant to have this post up last week, but I’ve been distracted by my amateur attempts at vlogging! Ah well, better late than never? This month’s birchbox turned up not in a box, but in a scuba bag, perfect for the beach or pool, and keeping your things safe and dry. A very summery presentation, I must say… So what did I think of this month’s surprise samples? Read on, dear ones!
what’s in my box?
marcelle waterproof eyeliner in mulberry
“Jaunts to the gym, holidays by the pool, and general humidity can mean that your make-up needs extra staying power. This blendable waterproof formula lasts- whatever you’re facing!”
my impression: I’m going to be honest, I only used this eyeliner about 3 times. I used some in an attempt to do a casual smokey eye, I lined my lower lashes with it, and I used it as a normal eyeliner. I will say that it did last a while, and went on really smooth. The main reason for my not using it had more to do with the color. The color didn’t suit me at all. In fact, it barely showed up on my skin. Perhaps if it had been another color, I might have gotten more use out of it, but that wasn’t the case this time around.
philip kingsley one more day dry shampoo
“We know you’re busy (who isn’t, right?) so let this lightweight formula get to the root of the problem – refreshing your hair with no washing required! The spray absorbs oils instantly, with no residue.”
my impression: I don’t normally use dry shampoo. Something in my brain says that it’s only for people with straight hair. I’ve actually used it when I’ve straightened my hair and it’s really great for that, but since I’ve stopped using heat on my hair I didn’t give it a second glance. Still, I gave it a go and honestly, I noticed a massive difference! I only wash my hair once a week, but spraying this on did actually feel refreshing, gave my hair a bit of a boost, and smelled divine! I think I’ve just added another product to my collection!
balance me radiance face mask
“Fed up of accepting dull skin? We feel you! Great for all skin types, this lightweight clay-based mask cleanses, exfoliates and brightens to boost luminosity in a matter of minutes.”
my impression: Loved this stuff! I’ve been using it when I’m in the bath, and I found it very soothing! It didn’t leave my skin feeling too dry, like some masks can, and the gel had a nice texture to it, and it stayed put once I put it on my face! I can’t say I noticed an immediate difference in how my skin looked… I wasn’t glittering like Edward Cullen or anything but it felt soft and hydrated, which is definitely a bonus!
anatomicals the buff stuff citrus body scrub
“This product name made us smile and the results are seriously good. Brimming with energizing grapefruit, it eliminates skin impurities and sloughs away dead cells to leave skin soft and silky.”
my impression: I’m going to be honest, I was a bit disappointed with this body scrub. It smelled delightful, but the scrub to soap ratio left a lot to be desired, and honestly, I didn’t really feel like it did much exfoliating. The texture of the gel was nice, and very soothing, but again, I didn’t really feel like it did much…
merci handy antibacterial hand cleansing gel
“Our hardworking hands do a lot for us, so it’s important to keep them health. Enter: this bacteria-busting hand gel that’s packed with vitamins to hydrate and nourish too!”
my impression: This stuff is handy to keep around, especially in a busy (and dirty) city like London. Admittedly, I had to remind myself to use it, but I liked the smell and it definitely made me feel like I was a little bit cleaner. I find these kinds of things dry out my skin really quickly though, so I use it sparingly. Will definitely keep it on me in case of emergencies though!
english laundry signature for her eau de parfum
“inspired by blossom-filled country gardens, this fragrance melds top notes of rose geranium and creamy white blooms with musk notes and a hint of spice. A perfect day-to-night scent.”
my impression: I liked this perfume a lot! It’s a tad more floral than I would normally go for, but not in an overpowering way. It’s actually really nice! Perfume is a luxury for me and not something I normally go for, but I’m starting to think I should have a few. This one will definitely be on the list in future!
the verdict: In all honesty, I’ve gotten better Birchoxes. There were a few things I did like (the dry shampoo, the perfume and the face mask, but everything else I was pretty neutral about. They didn’t wow me really. Which is fine. Not every box is going to be a 10. That’s the whole point though, isn’t it? Trying new things? I look forward to my Birchbox every month, and even when I’m not 100% happy with the choices inside, I always feel like I’ve come away with a bit more understanding of my needs and wants when it comes to a beauty regime and what products I like and don’t like!
