Recipe || Jamie Oliver’s Black Daal

Have you ever just fallen in love with a recipe and wanted to make it all the time? I can safely say that I have fallen in love with this recipe from Jamie Oliver’s cookbook, Jamie’s Comfort Food. I got the cookbook for P for Christmas, and it’s got some really great recipes in it! I was hemming and hawing over this recipe for a while because it seemed very complicated. When I finally did it, I was in love!

The first time I had black daal was at Dishoom, one of my favorite restaurants. It’s a delicious lentil-style dish with a ton of flavor, and it’s so hearty and filling. The fact that it cooks for six hours really freaked me out at first, but you aren’t cooking it yourself. It’s simmering away in the oven. Job done. You’ve got plenty of time for a movie marathon, a hot bath and a nap, or powering through your latest page turner!

It’s pretty straightforward as well. You blend up the onion, garlic and ginger and then cook the mix in butter before adding spices. Then you add the lentils, tinned tomatoes and a few other ingredients. Then you pop it in the oven for six hours to cook to perfection! It’s the perfect chilly weather meal and there is something really nice about preparing this food over a long period of time. Bonus points if you make your own naan bread to co with it. It’s always better when it’s made fresh!
