Happy New Year! The last few weeks have been really interesting, haven’t they? Once we get toward Christmas, people start thinking about what they’d like to accomplish in the next year. We’ve got 365 days to turn over new leaves, start afresh, and make those changes we’ve been thinking about for ages. I do it too! Lately, I’ve been thinking about what goals I’d like to set for my blog for the next year! And they’re S.M.A.R.T. goals too!
Own My Own Domain by June
This is perhaps the most important of all the goals. I actually wanted to do this last year, but it didn’t really work out in my favor. This year though, I’m really hoping to move my blog to it’s own domain. I love the idea of having a little piece of the internet that is solely mine, and honestly, I don’t always feel confident promoting my blog when it’s still got “.blogspot” in the link, like I don’t take it seriously or something… but that’s just my weird crazy thinking! Blogging has become so important to me, and I want to invest in it so that it can flourish!
Better Posting Discipline – Plan Posts a Week/Month in Advance
This is something I struggle with. I don’t really have a routine when it comes to blogging, and that means that sometimes I’m at a loss for what to post. It also means that things can sometimes be a bit last minute. So I really want to focus on better planning. By this, I mean, planning out posts in advance, whether for the week ahead or the month, so I can better figure out what photos I need and all the pieces that go into creating content. I’ve got lots of ideas but putting them into action is something I definitely struggle with. I’ve already planned out all my blog posts for January, so now I will start planning days to shoot and spread it out so that I can build that routine!
Learn and Understand SEO – Spend 1 Hour a Week Focusing on SEO
In theory, and at its very basest level, I know what SEO is, but I don’t really understand what that means and how it works. It’s a huge part of blogging, but one that I’ve been rather lax on… It’s time I really buckle down and figure out how it works and how to apply that to my blog!
More Outreach – Comment on 5 Posts a Week
A few things fall under this category, I think. I mean outreach in promoting my blog, and meeting other bloggers, but I also mean commenting on blog posts and reaching out to brands I like, and putting my name out there. It’s funny, I call myself a blogger, but thinking about it, the number of blogs I read and comment on isn’t very large. So one of my goals this year is to leave more thoughtful comments on blogs I already read, and newer blogs that I’ve discovered! I also have that classic problem of no follow-through, again because I have no routine. I want to reach out to brands and blogs I like and suggest ideas, really get the ball rolling in that regard as well. It’s all about growth and being the best blogger I can be!
Keep Educating Myself – Aim to Read 2-4 Posts a Month About Blogging
Blogging is a constant learning process. I’ve learned so much already, but I still find myself googling “blogging tips” and reading posts by other bloggers where they share their own experiences. It’s so important to keep up with things, but also to know that I’m not alone in this. I know I’m not the only blogger to be frustrated by a lack of comments or who has googled how to increase traffic. It’s trial and error. Some things work, and some don’t, but I have to keep reading and learning and trying, otherwise I’ll never get anywhere with my blog.
