I am a SERIAL over-packer. Packing light is definitely not my forte. The only time I managed it, I’d just had my appendix out, so I was living in leggings and sweatshirts. Leggings take up no room at all! When you’re going on a beach holiday, leggings won’t really do will they? 10 days of glorious sea, sun and sand? Calls for a bit flare where packing is involved. Since this was our first proper holiday since 2012 (I know, right?!) I thought it would be a good opportunity to improve my packing abilities!
When I would come visit Mr. Actually in London (when I was still living in New York) I would pack two weeks worth of clothing for a two week visit. Honestly though, I never wore everything I brought. For our beach holiday, I tried adding a little method to the madness. Not to worry though, I’ll still be bringing my customary 50 pairs of underwear (amiright?!)
The 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 Method
Thank god for the wonder that is Pinterest. The number of times I typed in ‘beach holiday packing’ for outfit ideas is hilarious! I noticed this method popping up a few times and it sure looks interesting. The premise is, you bring: 5 tops, 4 bottoms, 3 dresses/shoes, 2 swimsuits/bags, and 1 jacket/hat, etc. You can mix and match your tops and bottoms, and have plenty of outfits, before you even get to dresses! How clever! Also, this means, as fun as holiday shopping is, I can assess what I really need to buy (shorts) and not splurge on a whole new wardrobe. I’d rather save that money for a nice dinner and a bottle of wine, ya know? I went through my wardrobe and picked out my favorite items!
One of the delightful things about going on holiday is that your make up routine suddenly becomes non-existent. My skin loves the sun, so I’m much less inclined to put on foundation and blush and all those extra things that I might wear in my everyday life. I’m packing exactly 3 things: red lipstick, eyeliner, and mascara (waterproof). That’s not even an exaggeration. It’s nice to throw on some lippy to go out to dinner in the evenings, but it’s going to be so hot! Packing make up when I won’t even use it feels like such a waste of space! Minimal effort, maximum effect!
Keep Rolling, Rolling Rolling
This is perhaps the best tip I can offer anyone. I learned it years ago, and have been keeping it in my back pocket any time I have to pack a bag. Once I choose all my items, as I’m packing, I roll them up. Then, I fill the gaps with my socks and underwear. Yup, you read that right! Rolls take up a lot less space, and your suitcase and your clothes will thank you! I’ve also found wrinkles to be slightly less permanent this way! Hang them up when you get to your destination and you should be golden!
No Fuss, No Frills
Laziness is a certainty when it comes to my beach holiday, I think. Okay, maybe not laziness exactly but certainly low-key. We’ve all got those items of clothing that are a teeny bit high-maintenance. A beach holiday for me are t-shirts and flowy skirts, so you can bet I’ll be leaving that stuff at home. Easy, breezy, beautiful! Those jeans that are a bit too tight or take a bit of effort to get on, no matter how stylish? Well, they can take a vacation too!
Everyone has a different method for packing while on holiday. I imagine if I was going on safari, or a big city, my approach might be a bit different. Still, sticking to a less is more approach this time around certainly makes a big difference (especially due to the fact that Mr. Actually and I shared a suitcase… a true test of marriage!). Planning holidays can be a bit stressful, but packing shouldn’t be a part of that. There is a method to the madness!
