This is my third summer in London and I have to say, I’m completely in love. Because I first arrived in the dead of winter, I don’t feel like I got to know London very well until the weather started warming up. It’s a really incredible place to be in the summer, and I’m just gonna share a few of my favorite things about London in summer! Especially lately, with the weather being so delightfully hot! It finally feels like summer and I’m 100% here for it!
I’m very much a summer person, I think, so when the weather is warm, I’m in my element. I hate being cold, and honestly, sunshine just makes me so happy. I’m like a little lizard who needs to lie in the sunshine before they can really get on with their day. So weird, I know, but I do struggle in the winter. London in summer (and perhaps all of the UK…) is just so wonderful!
The Longer Days Mean Everyone is More Social!
One of the biggest adjustments for me is the fact that the days are just so long. London in summer means there’s still the remnants of daylight at 10pm! That to me is wild, and honestly, it makes me want to spend a lot more time outdoors. I find I’m much more inclined to stay out later, and enjoy the day as much as I can! I definitely don’t think I’m alone in this either! It’s much easier to sit outside a pub with a nice cold drink for hours, just chatting with pals before you feel like you need to call it a night. Things start a little later too!
The City Comes To Life, and There Is So Much To Do!
London in the winter is very sleepy; everyone is hibernating, and trying not to think too hard about the fact that it’s dark when you leave for work, and dark when you head home… London in summer is a completely different story! Outdoor cinemas, parades, music festivals… you name it. I feel like my social calendar is chockablock from May to September! Not only that, but even how going for a drink means sitting outside enjoying the sunshine. There’s so much life in the city, and people really trying to make the most of it! I doubt this is specific to London but in such a city vibe it’s hard to miss the energy!
The Barbecue Vibes, Even in the Park
Now, I am pretty sure that this isn’t specific to London, but it’s something I’ve come to associate with summer. The second the weather gets warm, everyone is on barbecue watch. The stacks of mini grills in Sainsbury’s, and quick pre-packaged grill top food are fully stocked once the weather starts to turn. I love the spontaneity of it; the way people can wake up and just decide they’ll have a barbecue. I walk down the street and I can smell it! Sunshine and barbecue. It’s what summer just means to me now!
My ‘London in Summer’ To Do List
– Spend time in the park with a good book
– Get a grill and make s’mores like I’m at summer camp!
– Grab a cocktail at a fun rooftop bar
-Check out listings for Luna Cinema and Rooftop Cinema, and book some tickets!
– Go swimming at Hampstead Heath
– Visit a lido. Just once!
– Say it with me: ice cream, ice cream, ice cream!
– Pack a picnic and sit in the sun!
– Check out the installation in Hyde Park
-Plan what places I want to visit during London Open House.
There you have it. I am loving this heat wave, and I feel like London is being it’s best summer self right now! Summers in New York had a similar vibe (minus the barbecues) except that winter and summer feel very much the same… not temperature-wise of course. London in the summer is just so vibrant and alive that it’s difficult not to make the most of it, even if you’re keeping things simple!
