My Favorite Holiday Films and Music to Indulge In

December 5, 2017

It’s that time of year again! Mistletoe, candy cane hot chocolates, wrapping presents in cute paper, hoping for a little snow, these are a few of my favorite things! My other favorite thing is watching festive Holiday films and dusting off my holiday playlist for a bit of cheer. I, like everyone else, have a few favorites that I always want to indulge in!

Holiday Films

When it comes to kicking off the festive spirit, the first thing I do is dust off a few DVDs. I’ve got my holiday favorites for sure, things I only watch around Christmas!

Love Actually: I watch this film without fail every single Christmas. In fact, I don’t think I can feel Christmas-y until I watch this film. I also have a raging crush on Alan Rickman, which naturally adds to the appeal. Fun fact: I didn’t know that the song Billy Mack sings was actually a real pop song released in the UK. Someone at my old job played the original song, and I asked why they were listening to the Love Actually song. Eek!

Home Alone 1 & 2: Both of these are a classic Holiday film for me!. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t watch these films at the holidays. I used to imagine what it would be like to be left at home, and have to defend my home in imaginative ways. I can’t say I’d be as successful as Kevin McCallister, but it was fun to dream!

The Holiday: What’s Christmas without a little romance? I especially love Kate Winslet in this film, and it gave me such a sweet, idyllic idea of England at Christmas. I’ve not been disappointed yet! The music gets stuck in my head for days, and I walk around with Christmas decorations, humming it and not even realizing!

The Muppets Christmas Carol: I’m an adult, and I still watch the  Muppets. No shame whatsoever. Of all the versions of A Christmas Carol that exist, I think this one is my absolute favorite. It definitely captures some of that childlike wonder that Christmas is all about.

Honorable Mentions: Elf, Die Hard (P’s suggestion!), Gremlins, Scrooged (Bill Murray? Yes Please!)

Festive Music

It’s difficult to hear Christmas music and not immediately be happy! Well, I can’t anyway! There are those classic Christmas songs I love listening to, and a few new ones I’ve discovered since moving to the UK! Christmas Number 1’s aren’t really a thing in the States but I’ve learned to love them too!

Glee, The Music: The Christmas Album: I used to be a big fan of Glee. I watched it religiously (okay, I watched the first two seasons religiously…) and loved the music from their Christmas episode so much that it still gets regular play at Christmas!

The Motown Christmas Collection: You’ve heard me mention before that I was basically raised on Motown, right? Hearing these tunes always makes me feel festive! You can’t go wrong with the Temptations!

8 Days of Christmas: I used to play this CD from Destiny’s Child on repeat, much to the amusement (and annoyance) of my parents. It’s just the best!

Merry Christmas by Mariah Carey: I mean, does anyone go through the month of December without listening to ‘All I Want For Christmas (Is You)’? I don’t know how, and I don’t know why you’d want to deprive yourself of such brilliance! Sing it, Mariah!

Honorable Mentions: Christmas Wrapping (The Spice Girls Version), Last Christmas, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays by *NSYNC, The Home Alone Soundtrack, A She & Him Christmas (I love Zoey Deschanel’s voice!)… Actually, there’s too many to count, so how about I just share my playlist?

Do you have any holiday films you watch every Christmas season without fail? What are your favorite Christmas songs?

My absolute favourite Christmas film is Elf, I can watch it over and over again and it still makes me laugh every time! Musical favourites obviously include Michael Buble’s Christmas album but Spotify also has some great Christmas playlists which I’ve discovered this year! 😀 xxx
