Winchester has been on my list of places to visit for quite a while now. Not only because it’s super cute and has a really interesting history, but also because my pal Kat lives there! We’d talked about my coming to visit for ages, but sometimes life gets in the way. Still, I decided it was time and I hopped on a train! Winchester is such a cute little city, and even though the weather literally rained on our parade, I still had such a fun day exploring! I’m already making plans to head back!
9:30am: Train from Waterloo
One thing I really love about London is how easy it is to take day trip out of the capital. There are so many cities in the UK, and Winchester was another one to tick off the list! Luckily, the train only takes about an hour to get to Winchester! I got to the station in ample time, grabbed myself a magazine, and enjoyed the view as we went whizzing through the countryside!
10:30am: Tea with Kat
Upon arriving at the station, my lovely pal Kat picked me up, and we headed back to hers for a cup of tea. The day was rather gloomy and grey, not that I minded much! Kat was also kind enough to play tour guide for my day out in Winchester!
12:30pm: Lunch at Josie’s
Our first stop, was, of course, lunch! We headed over to Josie’s for a bite to eat, and I’m so glad we did! It’s a full on breakfast menu, and I am a huge fan of all things breakfast related! It’s my favorite meal of the day! I ended up going for a more savory option, but the pancake options definitely caught my eye! I’ll just have to save those for next time! The price was pretty good too; sometimes I forget what it’s like to eat out in places that aren’t London… it’s definitely a bonus!
1:30pm: Visiting Winchester Cathedral
Even if you’re just driving through the city, Winchester Cathedral is well worth a visit. It is a real work of art. Better still, we happened upon a chior rehearsal, complete with an orchestra and an opera singer. We were basically serenaded with classical music as we wandered the hallowed halls of the Cathedral. My favorite part? Spying Jane Austen’s grave and having a bit of a moment. Obviously I’m a fan, so it was a bit surreal to see it!
2:30pm: Window Shopping at The Hambledon
I’m a big fan of independent shopping, so I was really excited when Kat said she was going to show me one of her favorite spots. Had I come down to Winchester with shopping in mind, I probably would have ledt with the whole store! There were so many cute homeware pieces, a stationery section overflowing with color (and several very punny cards I fell in love with) and an amazing collection of books to boot. Lucky for me, they’ve got an online shop, so I expect I’ll be making a purchase ot two in the near future!
3pm: Hot Chocolate at Chococo
It was around this time that therain really got the best of us, so we decided that a nice warm drink was in order. We popped into Chococo for a very decadent hot chocolate (which includes a tasty truffle onthe side too!) and a little catch up! Kat was an excellent tour guide, but it was nice to just sit for a little bit and hang out. Plus, I’m a sucker for anything chocolate, let’s be honest!
4pm: A Speedy Driving Tour
Our day was winding down, and there were a few more spots I wanted a peek at, so we did a lovely little driving tour! We stopped at College Street so I could spot the house where Jane Austen died (sadly it was under contruction). Kat also showed me a few of her favorite corners! If it hadn’t been such bad weather, I definitely would have walked around much more, which is my usual way to do my exploring! Still, I’ll just have to make sure I catch it on my next visit!
After that, it was back to London, but I would have happily stayed a few more hours! I feel a bit like I haven’t even scratched the surface with this cute little place; I’m sure there are so many more spots to explore on foot! It has so much history as well, and according to my fab tour guide Kat, has even been used as a film set (BRB, just going to frantically rewatch The Crown and see if I can spot little old Winchester!). Until next time!
