You better be-leaf it…
I love having plants in the house. When we first moved in, we had no greenery at all and it was a little depressing. Now though, we have a plethora of plant babies and are well on our way to having a little urban jungle! Now don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t always great at keeping my plants alive. But the love of having them lead me to reading up and learning as much as I could! When I shared our little oasis on the ‘gram, there was quite a bit of hubbub, so here’s a blog post with a few tips and tricks if you’re aiming to create your own little urban jungle!
Tip #1: Assess Your Light
It’s all well and good to just gung-ho buy plants, but if you want your urban jungle to thrive, you need to figure out your light situation first. We have south-facing windows so get lots of light, but our windows are also quite small, so the backs of the rooms are always shadier. Plants have preferences when it comes to light, so know what you’re working with first and your plants will thank you later! We have plants in almost every room, but have moved them around based on their preferences and what light our flat has to offer.
Tip #2: Keep the Plastic Pots
When it comes to watering and moving our plants around, I learned quickly that leaving them in the plastic pot they come in is probably a good idea. Aside from the fact that you can then mix and match your pots, making sure there is proper drainage becomes a no brainer. You can move plants around without disturbing them too much!
Tip #3: Check the soil before you water
It’s super tempting to water everything on a schedule, as we all lead busy lives! I usually reserve Sunday mornings as my plant watering day, but I always check the soil first. Why? Because not every little green guy in your urban jungle is going to absorb water at the same rate. Some plants thrive better if you let the top inch or two of soil dry out before watering. So make sure you check, and if it’s still a little damp, come back in a day or two!
Tip #4: Group them together!
Space is always a concern when it comes to an indoor urban jungle. So I started grouping my plants together. It actually has other benefits as well! Keeping plants with similar needs near each other actually makes it easier for me to care for them them! If you do group plants, make sure you think about their needs, like humidity, light, and water needs. Like should be paired with like, that sort of thing… It’ll make life a little bit easier for you too!
On watering day (after I’ve checked the soil, of course) I love taking all my plants either into the kitchen or the bathroom to water them. That’s where I snapped this ‘gram that inspired this post! Another bonus tip, don’t let plants sit in water. Put them in a tub or sink and water them with room temperature water, so all the excess water can drain off fully!
If you’re looking for more resources in your urban jungle journey, I have this book, which really helped me not be such a plant killer… I also love checking out The Spruce for houseplant guidance, and looking up details on specific plants!
Hopefully you feel a little bit more prepared to care for your plant babies! These are the tips and tricks I live by, and it’s made a huge difference!
