It’s the one year anniversary of Ghenet Actually! Which sounds strange, since I’ve had a blog for years, but I didn’t really do much with it before. When I moved to London and was unemployed, it became a lifeline, a creative outlet for me. A year ago today, I changed the name and really began blogging as I do now… I’ve learned so much in the last year and I really wanted to share some of it!
It Takes Time & Effort
I blog part time, but it sometimes feels like a full time job. I’m always trying to think of content ideas. I mean always. It’s not just my blog, either. I’ve set up a Facebook page for Ghenet Actually, and am slowly trying to build more of an audience… I put a lot of time and effort into my Instagram feed, because that is such an important platform for me. I’ve been putting a lot of effort into my photography skills as well as learning more about photo and video editing. I’ve started vlogging a bit as well. I firmly believe that you get out of your blog what you put into it. The more I’ve put into it in the last year, the more I’ve gotten out of it, which makes all the time and effort really worth it!
There’s a Great Supportive Community
In the last year, I’ve made some great friends through blogging, and for me, it’s been a really great support system. I’ve learned so much from Kristabel, Liv, Carrie, Jaye, and many others, and feel like I’ve made great friends in the process as well. I think the great thing is, there are some bloggers who I interact with mainly online and even those people are pretty supporting. Participating in Blogger Chats also proves that we all want each other to succeed. My experience has been extremely positive, and it has had a knock on effect with my blogging. I feel more courageous with my content and as a result, I’ve seen more success with my blog as well!
There are Ups and Downs to Keeping It Up
Putting in the work to create content takes a lot of work, and sometimes it’s a struggle. If I’m sick or feeling a bit low, or busy with my job, it’s tough to find the time to make it work. I always come back to it, but there have been instances where I don’t post anything for a week or two, because I just can’t get my head around it. I’ve learned not to beat myself up when this happens, but I’ve also learned to make the most of when I do have ideas and spread them out, so that if I feel like I’m in a lull, I have ideas already there that I can follow through with minimal effort.
Your Voice is So Important
This is the one aspect of my blog that I’ve been struggling with since the beginning: finding my own voice, and what I want to say. It evolves as I have new experiences and become settled in myself as a blogger. I felt for a little while that I should try to be like other bloggers, and do things the way they do things, but that felt forced and dishonest. I could feel myself become disappointed when the outcome wasn’t the same, so I started embracing my own voice as much as I could. I’m a size 16, with frizzy curls and a colorful personality. I want my blog to reflect that, and the more I embrace it, the better it feels. Honestly, the more success I’ve seen as well. This is who I am, and it’s important that I stay true to that.
There you have it. It’s definitely been a journey so far and I’m still learning but I’m completely in love with blogging. It’s changed my life, really, and has been such an amazing outlet for me. To say a little thank you, I’m going to do a little giveaway! One of my favorite ways to wind down, especially during the autumn and winter is a nice hot bubble bath! The prize of this giveaway is a little nod to that… a selection of Lush bath bombs to get you through the winter! All you have to do to enter is leave a comment below and like my Facebook page! The giveaway ends on the 3rd of November. Good Luck!
