A Birthday Trip to Bosham and West Wittering

I hadn’t actually planned on making this a blog post, but I got so many questions about where we went for my birthday and I took so many photos, that in the end, I thought… why not? Weekends away in the UK are definitely on everyone’s mind at the moment. We took two days off and went down to Bosham and West Wittering in West Sussex, and I gotta tell you… it was beautiful!

Road Trip

For our relaxing weekend away, we decided to rent a car. There is public transportation in West Sussex, but we figured it would just be easier to drive. The drive was about an hour and a half, and we had a great playlist so it was over in a blink! It was so nice to get out of London and have a change of scenery! Once we got down to West Sussex, we drove over to Itchenor, just across the water from Bosham. We parked and hopped on the ferry (it’s a quick trip, only 2 or 3 minutes, really) to begin exploring!

Once we were on the Bosham side of the water, it’s about a 30-40 minute walk. We had been a bit worried as it had rained on the drive down! Luckily though, some of that birthday magic rubbed off and the whole rest of the day was pretty sunny! The walk to Bosham is really pretty and you can actually see the harbour for most of it. During high tide, part of the road even becomes submerged! We missed out on that, but we could see where the road was still wet!

Fish and chips, anyone?

Before we had a little wander, our first stop was for a drink at The Anchor Bleu! They have tables out the front and the back of the pub, and since they’re right on the water, it’s quite a view! Since we lucked out with the weather, the tables outside were ideal! We ordered up a few pints (cider for me, lager for the Mr.) and some fish and chips! The pub was doing takeaway only, but it was still really tasty! The perfect set up, really!

It was so nice to sit and smell the sea air and enjoy the sunshine! Bosham really is the perfect setting for it! Once we’d finished our meal, we had a little wander around. It’s really fascinating to see all the different architecture. My favorite was a thatched roof cottage with a thatched peacock to boot! It’s such a picturesque little village, honestly!

Mr. Actually has been to Bosham before (he likes to go on bike rides in the countryside) and he’s always said it was beautiful! Hearing about it and seeing it in person were two completely different experiences! Honestly, I’d go back too!

Let’s go to the beach!

The following day, we spent relaxing at the beach. It started out a little rainy, and we had to wait in the car for over an hour! Eventually though, the clouds cleared and the sun came out! West Wittering beach is an incredibly long stretch of sand and dunes, and it was so lovely. Even though there were lots of people, the beach was big enough that everyone still had plenty of space to spread out and not worry too much.

The tide goes out so far, and it was warmer than the sea would have been because it’s more enclosed. Though it was pretty chilly and blustery when we were there! I went in the water but couldn’t quite submerge myself fully. Had the sun been out all day, I might have braved it! The wind was a bit too biting though…

Still, it was so nice to sit out on the beach and just take in the beautiful scenery!

Since we were so near Chicester, we had very intention of stopping there on our way back to London. The weather had other ideas though! It was absolutely torrential! We found a spot for breakfast, which was really nice, but I’d been looking forward to exploring… Still, we had two perfect days, and it was another chance to explore the UK! There are so many places I want to go! Mr. Actually and I are already planning our next little adventure and I can’t wait! Instead of a summery day in Bosham and West Wittering, we’re thinking somewhere cozy for winter!

  1. Ooo, this looks right up my street. I can totally see why you took lots of photos – I feel like I’d be clicking away the whole time! I’m besotted with that little ship in the round window.

And is there anything better than some chips, by the water, in the sunshine? A total highlight of Summer. I’m so glad the weather cheered up for you, for the most part!

If you’re looking for suggestions for a UK Winter break, Yorkshire or Wales both have some really beautiful spots. It’s a bit of a drive, but the views are wonderful and they’re both ideal for walks, hearty food and plenty of cosy places to stay and visit 🙂

  2. Bosham looks gorgeous! I live in Brighton and have been meaning to go to West Wittering for ages as it’s so close – it looks so beautiful there. <3
