My ‘End of Year’ Reading List

It’s the final countdown… We’re getting to the end of another year (how, I ask, because boy has 2020 been a whopper) and I’ve still got a pile of books by my bedside that I’m working through. Not that that is shocking, I am a huge bookworm after all! There are a few that are at the top of my list to get through before the year is out. If you’re looking for more titles to add to your TBR list, don’t you worry, I’ve got you covered! Here we go, my ‘end of year’ reading list!

When I wrote up my last book round up back in August, one thing I noticed was that most of my books, while by women, were by predominantly by white authors. So I decided to post on Instagram for recommendations, and boy did folks come through. I’m pretty pleased with how my To Be Read list is shaping up, and this ‘end of year’ list is no exception! So let’s take a look!
Dominicana by Anna Cruz:
On my list for a while, this is one of the Cozy Collective Facebook Group picks for November. It tells the story of 15 year old Anna who has the chance to move to New York City, and the life she encounters there. I’m really excited to read a book about my hometown from a totally different perspective, and the story sounds so intriguing!
The Confession by Jessie Burton:
I really enjoyed The Muse, also by Jessie Burton, so I thought I’d give her new book a try. I especially love the idea of a story told over two different time periods – this happened in The Muse, so I look forward to reading how it’s executed here! The Confession tells the story of Elise Morceau, and what happens when she finally meets elusive writer Constance Holden.
Last Tang Standing by Lauren Ho:
I’m pretty sure I spied this book on my pal Michelle’s Instagram page, and having seen many a great book recommendation from her before, I jumped! Lot’s of the descriptions of this book said that if you enjoyed Crazy Rich Asians you’d enjoy this. I definitely fall into that category! So I’m looking forward to reading this one, all about Andrea Tang and her life plan that suddenly isn’t going to plan…
Earthlings by Sayaka Murata:
All I knew before I bought this book was that it’s the same author as Convenience Store Woman, which I read earlier this year and thoroughly enjoyed. In this story, Natsuki is quietly living an unassuming life, but horrors from her childhood are threatening to come to the surface…
Red At The Bone by Jacqueline Woodson
This book comes straight from the comments section of the instagram post I mentioned above. A number of people recommended Jacqueline Woodson and several of her books. She has a number of titles that sound really great, but this one in particular called out to me. Red at the Bone centers around two families, brought together by an unexpected pregnancy.
City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert
I’ve never read any of Elizabeth Gilbert’s work before. I have seen Eat, Pray, Love but I’ve never picked up one of her books. This one sounded really interesting though! Set in New York in 1940, City of Girls tells the story of inseparable friends, Vivian and Celia as they begin a new life together.
The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett
Brit Bennet has been on my radar for a while, so I decided it was time to read some of her work. Spanning several decades, The Vanishing Half tells the story of the Vignes twins, sisters who are identical only in looks. I’m intrigued by the story, and it sounds like it will be a fascinating exploration of identity. I always find that interesting!

I’m sensing an accidental trend here. A lot of these books seem to be set in the US! Maybe I’m feeling a little homesick, and feel the need to read about my home country? Either way, I’m really excited to dive in and finish on a high note for the end of the year!

Ooooo, I love the selection of books on your end of 2020 TBR. I’ve heard so many good reviews about the Vanishing Half, I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!
The books I’d like to read by the end of the year are: I’m not your baby mother by Candice Brathwaite, Girl Woman Other by Bernardine Evaristo and Women don’t owe you pretty by Florence Given. They’ve been sitting on my shelf for a while and since we can’t leave the house, it’s the perfect opportunity to get through them and then buy more books for Christmas

Oh, I just finished Girl Woman other, and Candice’s book has been by my bedside for ages. Really need to read it!
I love a good reading list! Definitely putting Red At The Bone on my reading list too.
