Building a Wardrobe That Brings Me Joy

What’s that saying? You’re never fully dressed without a smile… Someone asked me fairly recently how I would describe my personal style. I wouldn’t say I have a specific style I resonate with; no capsule wardrobe or minimalist vibes. For me, it’s more about how my clothing makes me feel; it’s about making sure that every item of clothing in my wardrobe brings me joy. It’s part of what appeals to me about slow fashion; I’ve taken more time over and been more intentional with building a wardrobe, filled with things I genuinely love and want to wear…

I will say, the Three Outfit Rule has played a huge factor in this more joyful wardrobe building approach. I love colors and patterns and mixing and matching things, so when I find something I love, and it fits with what I already own, that feels pretty great! Straight way, I’ll start thinking about all the different ways I can wear that item of clothing. That, in turn, makes me really excited to wear things!

THE HUNT FEELS MORE REWARDING…

Because I’m taking the slower approach to building my wardrobe, it feels like more of a reward when I find exactly what I’m looking for. I was on the hunt for a trench coat to add to my wardrobe for absolutely ages. Depop, eBay, charity shops, you name it. I couldn’t find one that I had to have the minute I saw it. You know that feeling… when you see something and immediately go, ‘I NEED THIS!’ Then, one of my favorite vintage sellers, Finds By Foxes, posted a photo of the most gorgeous lilac trench coat I’d ever seen. And there it was, that I NEED THIS feeling. I’ve barely stopped wearing it since it arrived!

I LOVE TO GET DRESSED…

Going through my wardrobe and picking something to wear… it feels like an extension of my personality, and there’s a bit of joyful intention there. Depending on my mood, I can turn to so many items of clothing handing in my closet. Whether I want to be more cozy, or more colorful, my wardrobe provides what I need! It inspires creativity, which is wonderful. I used to be that person who would feel so uninspired by my wardrobe, so I’d go out and buy loads of things I didn’t even like that much. I can safely say that is no longer the case!

IT’S EASIER TO SAY GOODBYE…

I used to be really guilty of holding on to things that didn’t fit me any more, because I was so sure I would wear them again. , because I’m more intentional about what I add to my wardrobe, and I have a better understanding of what’s in there, something wonderful has happened. Every item currently hanging in my closet makes me happy. It inspires creativity, which is wonderful. I used to be that person who would feel so uninspired by my wardrobe, so I’d go out and buy loads of things I didn’t even like that much. I can safely say that is no longer the case!

It all started with the Three Outfit Rule, and now I take real pleasure in slowly creating a wardrobe that brings me joy. It’s really inspired me to curate and create with intention. If I can’t do that with the clothes on my back, then when can I? Every find feels even more special!
