Do you ever look back at old pictures of yourself and think, ‘well, that was a real outfit choice!’ Trends may change, but elements of my personal style always seem to stick around. It’s funny like that isn’t it? Even as my body changes, and my location, job and lifestyle change and grow, there are definitely elements that stay the same. That being said, I do feel like my personal style has definitely grown and become more defined as I’ve gotten older!
A few things that have stayed the same over the last 20 or so years? My love of sneakers and jeans. I’ve been a tomboy as long as I can remember, preferring jeans to dresses, and despising the tights my mom used to put me in. Jeans were always a bonus. When I was thirteen, I had this amazing pair of gold glittery jeans that I wore to death. I wore them on my thirteenth birthday, and just about every day before and after. At some point down the line, I discovered skinny jeans, and spent a good few years stocking up on those. These days, I’m a little bit more experimental with my jeans in terms of style. I don’t really wear skinny jeans anymore, and I’m loving mom jeans. They’re so comfy, and I’m a fan of all the high-waisted goodness they provide. Sneakers have always been the same. I went through a phase of wearing Nike Air Force High Tops, a year or two when I wore a lot of ballet flats, and a pretty serious Keds phase! My one true love? Converse! These gold trainers were an impulse buy but I couldn’t resist the color! I always get compliments on them, which is a definite bonus!
When it comes to accessories, I’d say this is where my style has changed the most. I used to wear watches a lot when I was younger… specifically, I had an orange Baby G watch that I wore long after it actually stopped functioning as a watch. Then after a while, I sort of just stopped wearing watches. For years, I’d see nice ones and think, oh that’s pretty! It wasn’t until recently that I decided to start wearing them again. The same goes for check. I had no real inclination for it until I moved to the UK, then I started seeing it everywhere! Check is a staple of the British style I think, and it’s something I’ve definitely started wearing more of these days!
The other two things that have a big effect on my personal style? My glasses and my earrings! Weird, right? I’ve worn glasses in some form since I was about 16, and they’ve been an everyday necessity for the last 7 or 8 years. I used to be able to get away with not always wearing them, but these days, they’re very much a part of my face! I struggle to recognize myself without them! As a result, things like, how I wear my hair, the kinds of earrings I wear etc, have changed based on my glasses. I used to pretty much exclusively wear big hoop earrings too, bulky door knocker type things, but these days, I find myself drawn to smaller studs with a bit of flair as well as bigger statement earrings… You know, like those H&M ones everyone was buying last year? Yeah, I got a pair! It’s funny isn’t it how much that can change a person’s look over time, but mostly my personal style hasn’t alerted too much.
