GUYS. I’ve done it. The chop. I can’t tell you the stress of getting a haircut when you’ve got curly hair. Up until recently, I never got haircuts. Well, that or I did it myself, with a pair of scissors in the bathroom, in a moment of frustration (yikes!)! I’ve even had a few experiences where I’ve tried to explain about my hair and how much it shrinks, but the stylist doesn’t listen and I’ve left with a haircut I’ve hated, despite speaking up. We’ve all been there, I think, curly hair or no. These days, though, salons specializing in curly hair mean that getting haircuts is a bit less terrifying!
Confession. I’ve gotten more haircuts in the last 2 years, than I have in probably 4 or 5 years while I was living in New York.
I had always wanted to get a haircut at Devachan, the revolutionary curly hair salon that opened in NYC (it can be argued that their Devacurl products are what started this whole “No-Poo” craze). Their prices though, were (and still are?) way out of my price range.
I’ve had to shell out to take care of my hair in the past (the proof is the pile of hair products I have in my bathroom), but I couldn’t quite make that sacrifice this time.
So I just never cut my hair.
Oh, no that’s incorrect, I went to a beauty school for a really cheap haircut and it was the worst experience I’ve ever had. I was that desperate for a trim…
I’ve learned the error of my ways, and now try to get haircuts twice a year. Perhaps not as much as I should but a step in the right direction.
Time for the chop!
I especially wanted to get a cut and be rid of the dead blonde ends I’ve had for ages, the remnants of my fire-engine red hair and a bit of a bleaching experiment. I decided that I’d like to try short hair for a bit, a bob or lob or whatever you want to call it, as long as that meant I could have my own hair back… my very dark, much healthier hair.
The blonde has been ruining my do for ages and I finally felt like it was long enough for the chop!
So I called up my usual crew at Unruly Curls, my go to salon for a fix.
I can’t tell you what a relief it is to walk into a hair salon and see that every client and every hair dresser has curly hair just like yours. It instills a sense of calm and ease!
This is actually the shortest I’ve ever had my hair. Sometimes you’ve got to try something new, and honestly, if it means having healthy hair again, I would chop it all off if I had to!
It feels great just to have my own hair back, to be fully rid of a phase I went through.
That’s not to say I’d never dye my hair again, but for now, it’s time too take care of what I’ve got before I go off experimenting again. I’ve secretly always wanted to try out the pastel hair trend, but we’ll see what the future holds a little later!
