How Hygge Gets Me Through The Colder Months
I’ve made no secret of the fact that Spring and Summer are my favorite seasons. Blooming wisteria, bright sunflowers, sitting in the sunshine, long summer nights… I definitely thrive when the weather is warm. So, when the weather turns and we head into the colder months, it’s a bit of a struggle. Hygge is the thing that helps me the most when it comes to coping with the cold weather. The main reason: it’s cozy. I’m a sucker for being cozy!

IT HELPS ME FIND THE JOY IN THE GLOOM…
One of the reasons I struggle in the colder months is the lack of sunshine, and the colder temperatures. I find it overwhelmingly gloomy… but embracing the hygge defintely helps. I have scented candles galore, lots of blankets, and a penchant for warm cozy food. Taking the time to appreciate those little things has a huge impact on my wellbeing! Just the other day, I sat on the couch with a book, wrapped in a blanket with a cup of tea. I’d turned off the lights and lit a ton of candles, and boy was I a happy bunny.
IT HELPS ME CONNECT AND BE PRESENT…
In the early days of my hygge obsession, I convinced Mr. Actually to have a TV-free night. I made some daal, we cracked open a bottle of wine, and spent the night playing cards, listening to vinyl and talking. We weren’t on our phones, and we both were present. It’s so easy when it’s cold outside to camp out on the sofa, binge watching TV because it’s too dark to do anything else. Taking the time to find these little hygge moments means I’m actively being more present in my relationships. Who wouldn’t want that?
IT ENCOURAGES ME TO CHECK IN ON MYSELF…
Not only does hygge give me the opportunity to connect with others, it also helps me slow down and reconnect with myself. In the colder months, I definitely struggle and feel a bit lathargic, so indulging in a little hygge is a great way to check in with myself. Feeling a bit rubbish? I’ll take a nice hot bubble bath and then make myself a cup of tea or hot chocolate. It immediately shifts my mood! Allowing myself that compassion is so important, and knowing I’m doing a little cozy something for me really helps!

Don’t get me wrong, I 100% still love spring and summer, but shifting my mindset around the colder months has helped me find a little bit of joy in them too! It’s a chance to really slow down, and you know how much I enjoy that! So here’s to another season filled with all the cozy hygge vibes!

Oh I love this so much! Definitely feel the same in the cold winter months and especially in lockdown, things seem 10x harder. Love your little Hygge date night idea as well, that’s fab! Lotsa love, Hannah | http://www.hannahshappyhour.com
